The structure of hematite is shown in Fig. 4.17. It consists of planes of hexagonal, close-packed oxygen atoms perpendicular to the c -axis. Iron atoms are sandwiched between every pair of oxygen planes and occupy two-thirds of the octahedral sites. Neighboring sheets have a common plane of oxygen atoms and are linked by octahedral sharing faces.
